Well, basically, at this point Y2K doesn't even depend on a computer virus/program error now. I heard that probably the worst that would happen is that chemotherapy patients would get the wrong amount of radon. (Although more certainly could happen) For the realm of computers, that is. But as someone mentioned before, the whole concept of the stock market and banking system is built on faith. Even if you could convince the masses that nothing's going to happen, for computer data or a crash because everybody tries to sell at once, that's not to say that they still won't withdraw all their money and sell just in case. So wheter or not there will actually be a problem with the computers isn't going to make much difference.
Technical question: Come to think of it, didn't prices actually go down during the Depression, or was I wrong?
