How Not to be A Dumbass. Lesson 608: Understanding Who Has Control Over A Messageboard. So, you're on the Internet, and you've stumbled across a messageboard. One of the important things to understand about messageboards is that they are controlled by the person in charge of that website. How do you identify the person in charge? There are several ways to identify who is in charge of a messageboard. One of the best ways is to look at the URL. If that URL happens to contain the name of someone posting at that messageboard, then it's a good bet that person has some control over the messageboard. EXAMPLE: What's New - posted by Gremlin [24.10.132.178 - proxy1.denver1.co.home.com] on 12 March 2001 at 10.44.10 (0) This example is taken from the gremlin.net messageboard. Notice the name of the person who posted, indicated by the words "posted by". The name Gremlin is also contained in the URL of the website. There's a good chance that Gremlin might be the person in charge of this messageboard. In order to be sure, you can also check the EMail address of the user. To do this, put your Mouse Pointer over the name of the person posting, and click on it. We will get into other ways to find out EMail addresses on websites without loading other programmes later on in this book. Clicking on the poster's name will bring up a window that allows you to send Email, and will display the poster's EMail address. If the EMail address of the poster contains the URL of the website where the messageboard is located EXAMPLE: What's New - posted by Gremlin [24.10.132.178 - proxy1.denver1.co.home.com] on 12 March 2001 at 10.44.10 (0) Notice the EMail address of the user who posted this message. Gremlin's EMail address reads gremlin@gremlin.net, indicating that he may well be in charge. Other things to look for on the messageboard would be things like, in the case of gremlin.net, the phrase "Gremlinised by Gremlin", or a listing of rules that involve the name and EMail address of the administrator. What Does Being In Charge Mean, In Regards to the Messageboard? The person who is in charge of the messageboard has certain abilities. We cannot offer you a full explanation of these abilities, since you are a dumbass, but we can outline them for you. The administrator has direct access to the space where the website is stored, which includes the script that makes the messageboard work. By having access to these things, he can do many amazing things. He can change the content of things that other people have posted to the messageboard, and even delete posts. Another special thing the administrator can do, if he is knowledgeable enough, is edit the script that makes the messageboard work. By editing that script, he can make it so that certain people cannot post, and certain words cannot be used. He can even, depending on his ability, make it so that the name a person chooses to post under will be changed to something entirely different. Only the person who has access to the place where the website is stored can do this, though.
