I have a hard time accepting any sort of 'ignorance' defense on this one. For a couple of reasons.

1. The box of hair colour itself says right on it that you're to keep it away from children, and that if you get it in your eyes, or ingest it, you're facing serious problems -- the latter may result in death. It says that on both the box and the insert, right there with the allergy test admonisments.

2. She's been told repeatedly not to do it to the cat anymore, because it was not good for it, and, in fact, potentially damaging.

3. The sounds the cat was making should have made her stop.

There are a few other things, but I'm not going to bother getting into them here right now.
